CALCULATOR GUIDE
How this estimate works
What the calculator estimates
This calculator estimates the capital gain or loss from one disposition using the proceeds, adjusted cost base and disposition costs you enter. If the result is a capital gain, it also estimates the change in federal and provincial or territorial income tax after the taxable portion of that gain is added to starting taxable income.
What the estimate covers
The estimate covers one disposition using the amounts and inclusion rate entered, together with 2026 tax data for the selected province or territory. For a capital loss, the calculator reports the loss and an estimated allowable-loss amount but does not apply the loss against other income or calculate a tax saving from it.
Calculation method
Capital gain or loss equals proceeds minus adjusted cost base and disposition costs.
If the result is a capital gain, the calculator applies the inclusion rate used in the estimate to determine the taxable capital gain. It then compares estimated income tax before and after that taxable gain is added to the starting taxable income.
If the result is a capital loss, the loss is shown separately rather than being applied against ordinary income.
Understanding the result
The tax-change result relates to this disposition; it is not your total annual income tax.
The amount shown after disposition costs and estimated income tax is not profit. Adjusted cost base is used to calculate the capital gain; it is not part of the calculation of proceeds after disposition costs and estimated tax.
The proceeds calculation is based on the amounts entered. It does not confirm the amount of cash actually received.
