RRSP Contribution Tax Savings Calculator

Estimate how much an assumed deductible RRSP contribution could reduce tax at the marginal tax rate you enter. The result is an estimated tax reduction, not the refund or balance owing on a completed tax return.

CLARITY Pillar Tax Optimization

What this calculator estimates

The calculator totals the entered contributions and estimates the tax reduction using the marginal tax rate entered. It assumes the full contribution total is deductible.

An estimated tax reduction is not necessarily an income-tax refund. A refund or balance owing depends on the complete tax return and the amounts already withheld or paid.

How to use the calculator

Enter the amount of each contribution, how often it is made, the number of contribution periods, and the marginal tax rate to test. Confirm separately that the contribution is within available RRSP room and can be deducted for the applicable year.

How the estimate is calculated

  1. Total the contribution amount across the entered number of periods.
  2. Assume the full total is deductible and apply the entered marginal tax rate to estimate the tax reduction.
  3. Subtract the estimated tax savings from the contribution total to show a comparison amount; this is not a complete after-tax cash-flow calculation.

Example

Suppose the total RRSP contribution is $5,000 and the entered marginal tax rate is 40%. The estimated tax savings are $2,000: $5,000 × 40%. The contribution total less the estimated tax savings is $3,000. This is not a calculation of the actual refund on a tax return.

Assumptions and limits

This estimate assumes that the full contribution total is deductible and uses the entered marginal tax rate to estimate the tax reduction.

A marginal tax rate is different from an average tax rate. An RRSP deduction may affect income taxed in more than one bracket, so applying one rate to the entire contribution may overstate or understate the actual tax reduction.

Contribution frequency and number of periods only calculate the total. They do not determine the deduction year. The calculator does not confirm contribution room or calculate a complete return, tax brackets, alternative minimum tax, credits, benefit changes, taxes already paid, refund timing, or future withdrawal tax.
