Glossary term

Amortization period

An amortization period is the time used to fully repay a loan under the modelled payment schedule.

Plain meaning

What amortization period means

For a mortgage or loan, the amortization period is the repayment horizon used to calculate scheduled payments. A longer amortization usually lowers the payment but can increase total interest over time.

Formula role

How OpenBook uses it

Mortgage payment and amortization calculators use the amortization period with the loan amount, rate, compounding convention, and payment frequency to estimate scheduled payments and balance over time.

Common confusion

Amortization and term differ

The mortgage term is the period covered by the current contract. The amortization period is the estimated repayment horizon and commonly continues across several terms. Renewing the mortgage does not by itself restart the original amortization or erase the repayment history.
